A Bar or Bat Mitzvah is so much more than a ceremony—it's the beginning of a lifetime of Jewish identity and commitment. While preparing to lead the service is certainly important, it is only a small part of becoming a Jewish adult. The service may last just a few minutes, but the values, knowledge, and pride your child gains should last a lifetime.

There is a well-known story about the Lubavitcher Rebbe. After a boy celebrated his Bar Mitzvah, someone proudly told the Rebbe how beautifully he had read from the Torah. The Rebbe responded that while that was wonderful, the most important question was whether the boy had spent time learning what it truly means to become a Bar Mitzvah—because that understanding would remain with him for life.

Our Bar/Bat Mitzvah course is designed with that philosophy in mind. Through 10 engaging sessions, students explore the meaning behind Jewish life, mitzvot, tefillin, prayer, Shabbat, holidays, and what it means to take responsibility as a Jewish adult. We want every child to feel confident not only in what they do as Jews, but why they do it. Knowledge is empowering. Imagine your child beginning high school and confidently explaining why the Jewish New Year falls in September, or proudly sharing the meaning behind a mitzvah they observe.

Parents are strongly encouraged—and truly considered partners—to attend the course alongside their child. Judaism is passed from generation to generation (דור לדור), and these sessions create meaningful conversations and shared experiences that continue long after the course ends. The classes are engaging, memorable, and fast-paced, with simple review at home helping reinforce each week's learning.

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah course is separate from service preparation. We encourage families to begin the course as early as possible, and students complete the full program regardless of when their Bar or Bat Mitzvah takes place. Even if a Bar Mitzvah is in December, the student continues attending the course, because preparing for Jewish life is just as important as preparing for one special day.
